On today’s SBAM Weekly Podcast, Michael Rogers talks with Mark Haggerty, president of Michigan Solar Solutions, and his residential sales manager Ray Myers. Haggerty cites many factors that make solar energy a good business investment. “There still is a 30% federal tax credit and accelerated bonus depreciation allowances for businesses. Plus, one thing we've seen with a lot of businesses is their motivation is more marketing, where they realize that if it's public knowledge, they've gone solar, just like all these electric cars out there, most of them were purchased not for the return on investment but because it aligns with their motivations,” he says.

Her company provides occupational, physical and speech therapy services. “I'm really trying to work with Michigan Works and Innovate Smart Zone to figure out ways that we can create a talent pipeline from childcare, getting them really competent in those developmental milestones, passionate about what they want to do, and scaling them to a degree that gets them a higher earning wage to be able to support the lifestyle that they'd like here up in the UP,” she says.

On today’s SBAM Weekly Podcast, Michael Rogers talks with Scott Ellis, an owner of MichiGrain Distillery and a member of the Small Business Association of Michigan's Leadership Council. “One of my recommendations to anybody that is starting a business or running a business is really to make sure you have the ability to cash call, because that could have really been devastating to us if we didn't,” he says. “The other thing I want to say is that I think I made a mistake not owning the building. I highly recommend investing in the property because we can look to move now to maybe a better facility, but we're kind of stuck in a lease.”

On today’s SBAM Weekly Podcast, Michael Rogers talks with Anna Sinagra, CEO of OEX-Office Express in Troy. She is a member of the Small Business Association of Michigan's Leadership Council. “People are trying to get their employees back in the office,” she says. “A lot of them are very much back in the office, maybe a day here or there. I think it's moving more towards a flexible hybrid scenario. We have a lot of people that really want to attract people back to the office and they're doing that with some of the different offices, furniture and decor.”

On today’s SBAM Weekly Podcast, Michael Rogers talks with Alison Beers, the owner of Events North in Traverse City and a member of the Small Business Association of Michigan's board of directors. “People are back meeting in person, so it's great that people are traveling again, they're less reluctant to go to airports and travel to get to the meetings,” Beers says. “Again, that human connection is absolutely irreplaceable. When people share experiences together, whether it's a meeting, hearing a speaker, or having time to network, you can't replace that over Zoom, you can't replace that over a quick phone call or a typed memo. So that part has been great, getting our clients to be able to communicate what they want to say to their attendees.”

On today’s SBAM Weekly Podcast, Michael Rogers talks with Sue Justice, President and HR Business Partner for Emery HR, a VIP member of the Small Business Association of Michigan. She says a big challenge for small businesses is not only getting workers but keeping them. “I think it still is to a certain extent, once you find them, to getting them through the process that they stay, getting through the onboarding process, because I'm seeing now more turnover within that first 90 days,” she says. “That still can be very costly for for an employer, because they're still recruiting, they're still hiring, they've got people to train, and then they lose a person, they have to start all over again.”

On today’s SBAM Weekly Podcast, Michael Rogers talks with Jenny Brown, a member of the Small Business Association of Michigan's board of directors and CEO of an innovative non-profit organization in Oakland County called Dutton Farm. “We work with job seekers that have developmental disabilities,” she says. “We start with what's called a discovery process, giving them the opportunity to explore their gifts. What are they really good at? What is their stamina? What is their social emotional acuity? What do they really like to do? What makes them feel alive? So from there, we really are able to determine what skills need to be honed in where we can spend some time with additional training to upskill.”

On today’s SBAM Weekly Podcast, Michael Rogers talks with Eric Krohn, CEO and President of Cogent Hex, a member of the Michigan 50 Companies to Watch for 2023. “We're an automation company, and we love robots, obviously, but you know, robots don't solve every project,” he says. “What it does do is it allows companies to hire higher-paying tech jobs. You may get rid of an operator position but it also adds a technician job or a maintenance job. So really, it's kind of a shift.”

On today’s SBAM Weekly Podcast, Michael Rogers talks with Amy Young, president of Destination Consultants in Grand Rapids, a member of this year's Michigan 50 Companies to Watch. “I see a lot of companies use events to build a positive company culture,” she says. “I think more and more with people working maybe remote and not coming into the office, it's kind of hard to remind people of the company culture and to keep that on people's mind. So I'm seeing more and more town hall meetings, all kinds of activities that companies are organizing for their employees. I think it can help retain employees.”

He says that pandemic restrictions led to them changing hours in order to be more efficient. “Another thing we've done is enhanced our online experience for the customer,” Gauthier says. “So we really encourage pre-orders as a way of helping reduce waste and extra expenses, because habits have changed so much with what people do on a daily basis. On today’s SBAM Weekly Podcast, Michael Rogers talks with Rep. Greg VanWoerkom, who was recently named the Small Business Association of Michigan's 2023 Legislator of the Year. He says when it comes to growing Michigan’s population and workforce “you kind of have to focus on what is the category or demographic that you are seeking. And I think a lot of it is kind of that young family, you want those young people, those highly educated people moving back to Michigan, or even better, not leaving in the first place. We can't allow that brain drain to occur.”

On today’s SBAM Weekly Podcast, Michael Rogers talks with Art Betancourt, the founder of professional placement and executive recruiting firm AE Betancourt -- named to the list of Michigan 50 Companies to Watch for 2023. “It's always hard to find great talent, right? Just because there's a lot of available talent doesn't mean it's great talent. And so, finding great talent is always the premium and it's always difficult to do regardless of where the labor market is. Despite what the Fed is doing to intentionally impact the labor market, the challenge is a demographic issue,” he says.

On today’s SBAM Weekly Podcast, Michael Rogers talks with Jason Dodge, founder of Black Truck Media + Marketing. His firm was recently named a member of the Michigan 50 Companies to Watch for 2023. He shared his thoughts on artificial intelligence (AI). “You leverage AI where it makes sense,” he says. “Automate certain things in your business, those tasks that are just a time suck. But really, when it comes down to it, does AI understand the intent of your customer? And the answer right now is no, they don't.”

On today’s SBAM Weekly Podcast, Michael Rogers talks with Jon Tellier, president of JetCoSolutions, the Michigan Celebrates Small Business Veteran-Owned Small Business of the Year for 2023. “I think [being a paratrooper] teaches you to be flexible, and flexible in a couple of ways, because you exit that perfectly good airplane with a good tight body position and the wind takes you and pushes you to a location that you didn't necessarily plan on,” he says. “I think sometimes business does that, too. You get pushed into a predicament or a place where you have to figure a way to overcome it and to get around that obstacle.”

They are Elite Members of the Small Business Association of Michigan and own Aunt Belle's Kitchen in Rockford.
